Nell Freudenberger, "Hover"

Husband and wife, newly divorced, share custody of five-year old Jack. Jack has some problems with a boy at school also named Jack. In an incident on the playground, Jack reveals to his mother that Drew, his father, has a girlfriend. The narrator can fly, more like hover, although it only happens rarely and only as she performs household or motherly tasks.

"Hover" was first published in Paris Review and then included in Best American Short Stories of 2014.
