Cara Olexa, "Flood Story"

Read short story, "Flood Story," by Cara Olexa in the Winter 2009-2010 issue of Ploughshares. Paul returns home to help his mother bail the flooded basement then he accompanies Violet--who he'd babysat in years past--to look at demolished, by the flood, houses across the bridge. Then when a man, presumably the owner, confronts Paul for trespassing, Paul abandons Violet who is hiding in the bathroom. It is a realistic story in the details, setting, and emotions and harkens to Katrina, the Biblical flood, baptism, etc.
