Lara Vapnyar, "A Bunch of Broccoli on the Third Shelf"

The first story in Vapnyar's collection, Broccoli and Other Tales of Food and Love, tells of the narrator's first couple of years living in the United States, Brooklyn, from Russia. Her husband leaves her and she finds a friend who wants to cook vegetables with her. Broccoli or vegetables, in general, serve as a metaphor for the narrator's marriage. Although, she loved going to the Russian and Korean grocery stores and caressing the vegetables, she never cooked any. They were abandoned in her refrigerator until they rotted, except for one lonely bunch of broccoli that instead of rotting, dried out.
