Madhuri Vijay, "Lorry Raja"

First person POV story told by Guna, the younger brother of Siju, fourteen, who drives a lorry for the mines in Bellary, Karnataka, India. "Lorry Raja" tells of the horrible working conditions in the mines. The miners are told that the ore they extract is being used in China to build a stadium for the Olympic games. The theme is about the incredible enduring sense of hope that hard working people often maintain even in the face of devastating truths, scams and danger.

The story is about 27 pages long and was first published by Narrative Magazine in winter of 2012. Sign up at the Narrative magazine web site for free access to full text of the story, "Lorry Raja." Subsequently published in the 2014 issue of Pushcart Prize.
